Funadhoo is the capital of Shaviyani Atoll, located in the north of the Maldives about 200 kilometers from Malé. The island has roughly 2000 inhabitants and is considered a growing atoll capital with a modern administration. Funadhoo is characterized by long, narrow sandy beaches on its western side, which are regularly protected against erosion through marine conservation programs. The island hosts the Atoll Council Office, an atoll hospital, several schools and a modern, regionally important harbor that handles cargo for the surrounding 14 inhabited islands of the atoll. Through nearby Funadhoo Airport, opened in 2020, the island is connected daily to Malé, a key driver for the development of local tourism. Economically, the region relies on fishing, especially skipjack tuna, boat building and small scale agriculture growing coconuts, bananas and cassava in home gardens. The annual Eid festival draws visitors from across the atoll.
