Meedhoo in Raa Atoll is a significant agricultural settlement known for its unusually fertile soils compared to typical coral reef islands. About 1700 people live on the island, which supplies many surrounding atoll islands with fresh produce such as watermelons, bananas, cassava, eggplants and chili peppers. The island's history reaches far back, with archaeological evidence of long, continuous habitation. Economically, life relies on agriculture, fishing with pole-and-line boats and boat building, supplemented by jobs in nearby resorts like Bandos Maldives Resort & Spa and You & Me by Cocoon. The island has a school, a health center, an administration office and a lively harbor where cargo vessels and dhonis arrive and depart daily. Religious and cultural events such as the Eid and Ramadan festivals draw visitors from across the atoll.
