Fonadhoo is the capital of Laamu Atoll (also called Hadhdhunmathi) and lies around 250 kilometers south of Malé. The island is unusually elongated, nearly 6 kilometers long but only about 100 meters wide, and connected by the longest causeway network in the Maldives to Maandhoo, Kadhdhoo and Gan, forming a continuous paved road almost 12 kilometers long. Fonadhoo has about 2200 residents and is the seat of the atoll administration, with a hospital, several schools and a regional stadium. The island benefits from Kadhdhoo Airport and is linked by speedboat to resorts like Six Senses Laamu. Economically, life depends on fishing, a growing tourism sector, agriculture with cassava, bananas and watermelons, and boat building. The southern part of the atoll holds ancient Buddhist stupa mounds of great archaeological importance, occasionally visited by research teams.
