Mushimasmingili Marine Protected Area (Maldives)

Weather…

Mushimasmingili Marine Protected Area, widely known among international divers as Fish Head, is a quintessential 'Thila' (underwater pinnacle) located in the North Ari Atoll. The reef rises from the ocean floor to a flat top at about 10 meters depth, characterized by its dramatic overhangs and deep crevices. It is world-renowned for its resident population of grey reef sharks, which are attracted by the nutrient-rich currents that sweep through the channel. The biodiversity here is staggering, with reef walls draped in lively soft corals, gorgonians, and sea fans. Divers frequently encounter massive schools of blue-striped snappers, patrolling barracudas, and friendly Napoleon wrasse. Officially designated as a protected area in 1995, it remains one of the most strictly managed marine sites in the Maldives, ensuring that its delicate ecosystem and apex predators are preserved for future generations of ocean enthusiasts.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
Mushimasmingili MPA, also known as Fish Head, is an excellent dive site year-round, but best visibility is from December to April. During this time reef sharks are especially numerous and curious.
🌅
Best time of day
In the morning, shortly after sunrise, the sharks are often most active, patrolling along the rock pinnacle. Afternoon dives can also be rewarding, especially when the sun is low.
📜
Etiquette
Stay within the marked boundaries of the protected area and do not touch anything. Feeding the sharks is strictly prohibited as it impairs their natural hunting behavior.
🎒
What to bring
A good camera is recommended as there are many photo subjects, from sharks to colorful corals. A dive computer helps to control depth since the pinnacle top reaches near the surface.
🧭
Getting there
The MPA is located in North Ari Atoll and is reachable by dive boat from most resorts in the area. Travel time is usually 30 to 50 minutes.
🦌
What to expect
Although sharks are common, they can be shy - stay calm and avoid sudden movements. Often they come very close if you do not behave threateningly.
