Maafushi is one of the most important islands in Kaafu Atoll because since 2009 it has been considered the pioneer of local island tourism in the Maldives. Before liberalization, tourism was confined to private resort islands; Maafushi was the first location where Maldivians were allowed to operate guesthouses and hostels for foreign visitors. Today the small, 1.2 kilometer long island has over 60 guesthouses, restaurants, dive schools and a designated bikini beach for tourists. Around 3000 people live here year round, but the population can easily double with tourists during peak season. Maafushi is only 27 kilometers from Malé and is served several times a day by speedboats and public ferries. On one part of the island lies the largest prison of the Maldives (Maafushi Prison), in a clearly delimited zone that barely impacts daily life. The island is famous for budget snorkeling tours, sandbank picnics and whale shark trips to South Ari Atoll.
