Best season
The best season for manta ray sightings at Fushifaru Thila is during the southwest monsoon from May to November. During this time, large amounts of plankton flow through the reef channels, attracting mantas to the cleaning stations.
Best time of day
Morning hours between 9 AM and noon are well-suited, as the current is often strongest and the mantas are most active at the cleaning stations. Late afternoons between 3 and 5 PM also offer good chances, especially when the tide changes.
Etiquette
Do not touch manta rays and keep a minimum distance of three meters to avoid damaging the animals' sensitive mucus layer. Diving or snorkeling with gloves is prohibited, and the use of underwater flash should be avoided.
What to bring
Snorkeling gear or light diving equipment is required, as the cleaning stations are at depths of 5 to 15 meters. Bring a waterproof camera with a wide-angle lens to capture the graceful manta rays in their natural element.
