  • Visit traditional weaving workshops to see the island's famous 'Feyli' fabrics being made.
  • Always wear clothing that covers shoulders and knees in the village, as the island is quite conservative.

Eydhafushi is the capital of Baa Atoll, designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2011 and thus one of the ecologically most valuable regions of the Maldives. Around 2700 people live on the island, which is famous for the centuries old tradition of Thundu Kunaa mat weaving, produced from the fibers of the local Hau plant. These fine mats are dyed with natural pigments from mangrove bark and woven in intricate geometric patterns, a craft practiced almost exclusively by women. Tourism in Eydhafushi benefits enormously from the proximity to Hanifaru Bay, a world famous hotspot for manta rays and whale sharks that feed on plankton in dense aggregations between May and November. The island has an atoll hospital, several cafés serving local dishes such as Mas Huni and a busy harbor that supports local guesthouse tourism and snorkeling excursions.
