Alifushi is a remote island in the northernmost part of Raa Atoll, almost at the border with Haa Dhaalu Atoll, and is regarded as the traditional center of Maldivian boat building. Here, for generations, the iconic Dhoni boat has been crafted, the wooden multipurpose vessel with a high upturned bow, found throughout the Indian Ocean. The state owned Alifushi Boatyard, founded in 1979, was for decades the country's main production site and still employs many experienced boatbuilders and carpenters. About 2000 people live on the island, and the economic focus remains on shipbuilding, fishing and small scale agriculture. The geographic remoteness, reachable only by speedboat or domestic flight to Ifuru Airport, has preserved a very strong local identity. The island has a school, a health center, a mosque, an administration office and several small shops shaping everyday life.
