Best season
The best time to visit Goidhoo Wetland is during the dry season from November to April, when migratory birds are most numerous. From December to February, the highest numbers of waders and ducks gather at the freshwater lakes.
Best time of day
Early morning hours between 6 and 9 AM are handy for birdwatching, as birds are most active foraging. Late afternoons from 4 PM also offer good sightings, when birds return to their roosting sites.
Etiquette
Stay on designated paths and observation platforms to avoid disturbing the fragile shoreline vegetation. Feeding birds or entering reed beds is not permitted in order to protect breeding sites.
What to bring
Good binoculars with 8x to 10x magnification are essential for identifying migratory birds from a distance. Comfortable walking shoes and water-resistant clothing are recommended for walks through the wetland, as well as a bird guide for the Maldives.
Getting there
Goidhoo is located in Baa Atoll and can be reached by domestic flight from Malé to Dharavandhoo Airport (about 30 minutes) followed by a boat transfer. From Dharavandhoo, the boat ride to Goidhoo takes about 20 minutes.
What to expect
Birdwatching at the freshwater lakes requires quiet and patience - often rare species hide in the reeds and only emerge in stillness. Sit down in a shady spot and wait while the birds gradually lose their shyness.
