The Mendhoo Region in Baa Atoll is a strictly protected marine and terrestrial area within the Maldives' UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. This conservation zone encompasses the islands of Mendhoo and Nibiligaa, along with their surrounding reef systems, which are renowned for exceptional coral diversity. The region serves as a critical nesting site for seabirds, while its beaches are important breeding grounds for endangered sea turtles, particularly the hawksbill turtle. Historically, these islands have remained largely uninhabited due to their remote location, facilitating the preservation of original island vegetation and intact ecosystems. Currently, access to the core zone is heavily restricted to facilitate scientific research and to minimize ecological stress from human activity.
