💡 Tips
- Be prepared for multiple military checkpoints in the Beqaa Valley; always carry your passport.
- The Orontes (Assi) River is freezing year-round, making it first-rate for summer rafting but too cold for a casual swim.
- Respect local customs; Hermel is conservative, so modest dress is appreciated.
- Summer days are intensely hot and dry, but temperatures drop pleasantly in the evening.
- Public transport is limited; renting a car or hiring a local taxi is the best way to get around.
🍽 Food
Freshly caught trout from the Assi river is the absolute must-try, usually served grilled at riverside restaurants.
Try these small open-faced meat pies (Baalbek style) from a local bakery.
Though Hermel is conservative, the surrounding Beqaa region produces excellent traditional anise-flavored spirits; find it at select venues.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
The dry climate produces rich olive oil; look for locally bottled options at small grocers.
Stop at roadside stands in the Beqaa Valley for seasonal fruits like cherries and apricots.
Visit this ancient pyramid at sunset; it sits on a quiet, windswept hill with panoramic valley views.
Walk upstream to the source of the Orontes river for a remarkably peaceful and lush natural setting.
Water temperature…
Hermel is located in the northernmost part of the Beqaa Valley, within the Orontes (Asi) River valley, approximately 140 kilometers from Beirut near the Syrian border. The city's climate is considerably more arid than the rest of Lebanon, with the surrounding landscape dominated by semi-desert plains and the rugged Anti-Lebanon Mountains. Thanks to the fast-flowing waters of the Orontes River, Hermel functions as Lebanon's primary center for whitewater rafting, attracting numerous adventure tourists from spring through autumn. A short distance from the city stands Kamouh el Hermel, a mysterious 27-meter-tall ancient pyramid-shaped stone monument adorned with hunting reliefs, believed to be the tomb of a 2nd-century BC monarch. The population of Hermel is almost entirely Shia Muslim, and the social structure of the city is still heavily defined by extensive clan and tribal affiliations. The local economy is largely based on livestock rearing, trout farming, and agriculture.
