Al-Qusayr lies about 35 kilometers southwest of Homs in a fertile plain between the Orontes River and the Anti-Lebanon Mountains, very close to the Lebanese Beqaa Valley. The town grew above all in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries through irrigation and agricultural projects, becoming an important supplier of fruit, vegetables and dairy products and closely linked to the Christian villages of nearby Wadi al-Nasara (Valley of the Christians) and to the Crusader fortress of Krak des Chevaliers. Its strategic importance comes from sitting on the corridor that connects Syria's border region with the Lebanese interior. During the civil war Al-Qusayr was at the center of a major battle in 2013, after which government forces, backed by Hezbollah, took control. Reconstruction and shifts in the population balance have shaped the town ever since.
