Safita lies in the Tartus governorate, built on three successive hills of the Syrian coastal range that rises behind the Mediterranean. The town's defining landmark is the Chastel Blanc (White Castle), a former Templar fortress from the twelfth century whose white-stone keep still dominates the skyline. Inside the keep stands the Chapel of Saint Michael, a small, austere Orthodox church still used for services, an unusual double function of military tower and sacred space. Safita is surrounded by vast olive groves and citrus orchards, and its cooler summers have long made it a traditional resort of the coastal hinterland. Its population is mixed, with Alawite, Christian and Sunni communities. From the top of the keep, on clear days, both the Crusader fortress of Krak des Chevaliers and the Mediterranean are visible.
