Yabroud lies in the Qalamoun Mountains north of Damascus, at an altitude of about 1450 to 1550 meters, which makes it one of the highest towns in Syria. The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times: caves around the town gave their name to the Palaeolithic Yabrudian culture, a distinct tool tradition. In Roman times Yabroud was an important stage on the road between Damascus and Emesa. The town is best known for the Cathedral of Saints Constantine and Helena, whose foundations go back to early Christianity and which today belongs to the Melkite Greek Catholic Church; its icons and altars are notable examples of the Antiochene tradition. Mosques and remains of small fortifications also dot the urban landscape. Yabroud has long been a popular summer resort and pilgrimage center, attractive to Damascenes for its cool climate and its mixed Christian-Muslim population.
