Bcharre is a photogenic mountain town perched on the edge of the Kadisha Valley in northern Lebanon, situated at an elevation of approximately 1,500 meters above sea level. Historically, the settlement has been a crucial stronghold for Maronite Christianity, and its inhabitants continued to speak Aramaic well into the 19th century. Bcharre is renowned as the birthplace of the famous Lebanese-American poet, writer, and painter Khalil Gibran; his museum, housed in a former monastery, attracts thousands of visitors annually. Above the town lies the famous Cedars of God forest (Horsh Arz el-Rab), one of the last strictly protected remnants of the ancient Lebanese cedar forests, which, alongside the valley, is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site. Bcharre serves as a popular base for hikers exploring the ancient rock-hewn monasteries and caves of the Kadisha Valley. During winter, the nearby mountain slopes become a popular destination for skiing. The local economy is driven primarily by tourism and agriculture, specifically apple orchards.
