Qobayat is the largest and one of the most important towns in Lebanon's Akkar Governorate, set among green mountains and dense forests of oak, pine, and cedar in the northernmost part of the country. The settlement functions primarily as a Maronite Christian enclave within the largely Sunni-majority Akkar region. Qobayat is renowned for its pristine natural environment and excellent hiking routes, serving as the northern terminus of the 140-kilometer Lebanon Mountain Trail. The religious and historical significance of the town is highlighted by the ruins of an old silk factory and the ancient walls of the Mar Challita monastery, as well as a unique butterfly museum that holds one of the most substantial entomological collections in the country. During the summer, Qobayat hosts bustling festivals that draw tourists and members of the Lebanese diaspora. The local economy relies heavily on agriculture from the surrounding lands, specifically apple and olive cultivation, along with eco-tourism.
