Monastery of St. Thecla (Syria)

Weather…

The Monastery of Saint Thecla in Ma'loula is a Christian pilgrimage site of exceptional historical importance, carved directly into the steep limestone cliffs of the Qalamoun Mountains. According to legend, Saint Thecla, a disciple of Saint Paul the Apostle, was fleeing from her persecutors in the 1st century when the mountain miraculously split open to provide her with refuge. The monastery developed around this holy grotto, which houses a water source believed to have healing properties and the tomb of the saint. Ma'loula is also one of the last places on earth where Western Aramaic, the language spoken by Jesus Christ, is still used in daily life and liturgy. The complex features numerous terraces, small chapels, and living quarters for the nuns, harmoniously integrated into the rugged rock face. Despite threats from modern conflicts, the monastery remains a symbol of deep-rooted Christian traditions and religious diversity in Syria.
