Battle of Torvioll Site (Albania)

Weather…

The Torvioll battlefield is the site of one of the most significant military triumphs in Albanian history. On June 29, 1444, the forces of Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg faced the Ottoman army led by General Ali Pasha in their first major open-field engagement. Skanderbeg, leading a force of about 15,000 soldiers, skillfully utilized the rugged terrain of the Lower Dibra region to trap the numerically superior Ottoman army of approximately 25,000 men. By deploying hidden reserves in the surrounding forests, the Albanian forces managed to encircle the enemy and deliver a crushing defeat. The battle resulted in heavy casualties for the Ottomans and established Skanderbeg's reputation as a brilliant military tactician. This victory was instrumental for the continued existence of the League of Lezhë and proved that a united Albanian front could successfully challenge the expansion of the Ottoman Empire. Today, the area serves as a testament to this heroic encounter, which marked the beginning of a quarter-century of organized resistance that resonated throughout Europe.
