Valbona Valley National Park (Albania)

Weather…

Valbona Valley National Park is located in the Albanian Alps in the north of the country and is considered one of the most spectacular high mountain areas in the Balkans. It was established in 1996 and covers an area of about 80 square kilometers along the crystal-clear Valbona River. The landscape is characterized by rugged limestone peaks such as Maja Jezercë, which at 2,694 meters is the highest mountain in the Dinaric Alps outside Greece. Dense forests of beech and pine, as well as alpine meadows, provide habitat for brown bears, wolves, and chamois. The cultural significance of the region is reflected in the traditional stone houses of the mountain villages, where the hospitable culture of the Malësorë is maintained. Hikers use the well-developed network of trails, especially the famous path over the Valbona Pass to Theth. Despite its ecological importance, the park faces challenges from planned hydropower projects, which has led to increased nature conservation efforts. The region is part of the cross-border 'Balkans Peace Park' project.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Reaching the valley normally involves taking the Lake Koman ferry followed by a mountain drive. The local villages along the crystal-clear river serve as the primary trailheads.
📅
Best season
The good hiking window is typically from June to September when the alpine routes are clear. Winter transforms the valley into an isolated snowy sanctuary, blocking many roads.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
Visitors encounter a mix of gentle valley floors and extremely steep, rocky alpine trails. Dense coniferous forests cover the lower slopes, eventually giving way to raw mountain peaks.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy mountain boots, trekking poles, and warm, waterproof layers are highly advised. Since this is a vast mountain valley, carrying comprehensive emergency gear is widely recommended.
🅿️
Parking
Guesthouses usually provide ample parking for those staying in the valley overnight. Day visitors can often find informal roadside pull-outs near the major trail entrances.
⚠️
Safety
Hikers should stay on marked paths to avoid disturbing the sanctuary's wildlife, including wolves. Always monitor the sky, as mountain thunderstorms can develop incredibly rapidly.
⏱️
Time needed
People typically plan to stay for two to four days to explore the various long trails. A single ambitious hike up the surrounding alpine peaks usually consumes six to eight hours.
