💡 Tips

  • Withdraw cash here as there are no ATMs in the Valbona Valley and most guesthouses do not accept credit cards.
  • Refuel your vehicle in Bajram Curri; this is your last chance before heading deep into the National Park mountains.
  • Minibuses (furgons) to Valbona usually depart around 2:30 PM from the town center, timed with the arrival of the Koman ferry.
  • Stock up on snacks and specific mountain supplies here; Valbona has very few shops with limited goods.
  • The Koman Lake ferry is the most scenic way to arrive; from the Fierza dock, furgons wait to take you to Bajram Curri.

Bajram Curri is the primary town of the Tropojë region in the far north of Albania, picturesquely situated at the base of the Albanian Alps. The town was officially founded in 1952 and named after the Albanian national hero Bajram Curri, who played a central role in the struggle for independence and against Serbian expansion. Previously known as Kolgecaj, the settlement was a small marketplace for the regional highland tribes. Today, Bajram Curri serves as the main gateway to the Valbona Valley National Park, one of the most spectacular natural areas in the Balkans, attracting thousands of hikers annually. The town is frequently accessed via the remarkable ferry trip across Lake Koman, which is often cited as one of the most beautiful boat journeys in the world. Economically, the region is characterized by livestock farming, chestnut harvesting, and growing mountain tourism. Despite its modern urban establishment, Bajram Curri embodies the proud and hospitable character of Northern Albanian highland culture.
