Gashi River Nature Reserve (Albania)

Weather…

The Gashi River Nature Reserve is situated in northeastern Albania in the Tropojë municipality and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2017, as part of the 'Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe.' The reserve covers an area of approximately 3,000 hectares and protects one of the most pristine ecosystems in the country. The landscape is characterized by a deeply incised glacial valley through which the Gashi River flows, surrounded by steep mountain slopes. The beech forests in this area are in some parts over 300 years old and exhibit high structural diversity. These primeval forests provide critical habitat for the brown bear, the wolf, and the chamois. Beyond the forests, the reserve also hosts alpine meadows and glacial lakes at higher elevations. The scientific importance of the area lies in the study of natural forest development processes without human interference. Due to its remote location near the borders of Montenegro and Kosovo, access remains difficult, which has contributed to the preservation of its original state.
