Grlja Canyon (Montenegro)

Weather…

The Grlja Canyon near Gusinje, located in the heart of the Prokletije National Park, is a striking example of the power of water in karst landscapes. The Grlja River, fed by the famous 'Oko Skakavice' (Grasshopper’s Eye) karst spring, plunges in a dramatic cascade into a narrow and deep gorge. The canyon is noted for its extreme narrowness and nearly vertical walls, which in some sections are only a few meters apart. Geologically, Grlja is a site where the river partially disappears beneath the earth's surface, flowing through subterranean passages before emerging again. The surrounding area is characterized by alpine flora, where the high humidity near the waterfalls supports the growth of rare mosses and lichens. Historically and culturally, the site is closely linked to the town of Gusinje and serves as a gateway for expeditions into the Albanian Alps. The canyon is particularly impressive during the spring snowmelt, when massive volumes of water thunder into the depths with immense force.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The canyon is located near the town of Gusinje in the Prokletije region. It is easily reachable by a short walk from the local road that leads to the Ali Pasha Springs.
📅
Best season
Spring and early summer are spectacular times to visit, as melting snow fuels the roaring waterfall. By late summer, the water flow often decreases significantly.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The viewpoints for the waterfall and the upper canyon are accessible via short, relatively easy dirt paths. Descending into the deeper parts of the gorge is extremely dangerous.
🎒
What to bring
Comfortable walking shoes are sufficient for the main viewing areas. A waterproof jacket is handy if you plan to get close to the waterfall's spray during peak flow.
🅿️
Parking
Parking is typically available along the roadside or near the nearby rural guesthouses. The parking areas are informal, so ensure you do not block the narrow mountain road.
⚠️
Safety
Stay well behind natural barriers and avoid the slippery rocks near the canyon edge. The sheer drop into the gorge is sudden, and the rocks are treacherous when wet.
⏱️
Time needed
A visit to view the Grlja waterfall and the immediate canyon surroundings usually takes less than an hour. It is often combined with a trip to the nearby springs.
