Theth National Park (Albania)

Weather…

Theth National Park is located in the heart of the Albanian Alps (Prokletije) and is one of the most isolated yet striking mountain regions in the country. The village of Theth is characterized by its traditional stone architecture and the historic "Kulla" tower, which once served as a sanctuary during blood feuds. The park is traversed by the Shala River, whose crystal-clear waters feed several deep canyons and the impressive Grunas Waterfall. Geologically, the area is dominated by jagged limestone peaks reaching elevations over 2,500 meters, surrounded by U-shaped glacial valleys. The region is known for its rich biodiversity, including brown bears, wolves, and golden eagles that inhabit the dense beech forests. Despite its remote location, Theth is a key hub for mountain trekking and provides access to major regional hiking trails. Designated as a national park in 1966, the area preserves both its unique alpine ecosystem and traditional mountain heritage.

📋 Practical info

🚪
Visiting
This rugged and unspoiled mountain park provides outstanding opportunities for challenging hikes, authentic village stays, and exploring remote alpine landscapes. You can freely walk the extensive network of trails and visit beautiful traditional stone houses along the way.
🕒
Typical hours
The mountain trails are naturally accessible at all times without restriction, though serious hiking is only safe during bright daylight hours. Local family-run guesthouses and tiny mountain cafes typically welcome visitors continuously from early morning until the late evening.
📷
Photography
The razor-sharp limestone peaks, incredibly deep green valleys, and the iconic Grunas Waterfall are absolute top subjects for ambitious nature photography. The isolated tower houses (kulla) provide fantastic cultural snapshots set against the dramatic mountain backdrop.
⏱️
Time needed
Most visitors choose to spend at least two to three full days in the area to complete the famous regional hikes and fully immerse in the tranquility. Just a quick visit to the main valley village and waterfall already requires a very strenuous, full-day long trip.
Combine with
The classic and highly popular regional trek connects Theth directly with the impressive Valbona Valley over an incredibly scenic mountain pass. You can also thoroughly explore the historic northern city of Shkodër before or after heading deep into the remote highlands.
🧭
Getting there
Access traditionally involves a long, steep drive on partially unpaved, winding mountain roads from Shkodër, often requiring a highly sturdy 4x4 vehicle. During the harsh winter months, heavy and continuous snow can completely block the access roads to the valley for months.
💡
Insider tip
Make sure to carry sufficient cash, as ATMs and modern card payments are virtually nonexistent in these completely remote mountain guesthouses. Always inform your guesthouse hosts about your detailed hiking plans, as the high alpine weather can be extremely unpredictable.
