Velence Lake Bird Sanctuary (Hungary)

Weather…

The Velence Lake Bird Sanctuary is located at the western end of the lake and covers an area of approximately 420 hectares of reed beds and marshland. Established as a protected area in 1958, it aims to preserve the valuable nesting and resting grounds of numerous rare bird species. The site is recognized as a Ramsar wetland of international importance and is home to significant populations of great egrets, spoonbills, and various species of ducks and geese. During the spring and autumn migration periods, the sanctuary serves as a vital stopover for thousands of migratory birds. Access to the core area is strictly regulated to ensure birds are not disturbed during the breeding season. From observation towers at the edges of the reserve, nature enthusiasts can observe the diverse fauna of Hungary's second-largest natural lake.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
Spring (March to May) is the best season for bird migration, when thousands of migratory birds stop at Velence Lake. Summer (June to August) brings breeding waterbirds, offering chances to see chicks.
🌅
Best time of day
Early mornings around sunrise are well-suited, as birds are most active with singing and foraging. Dusk also provides good sightings as many species settle into the reed beds.
📜
Etiquette
Always stay on marked paths and never enter reed beds to avoid disturbing nesting habitats. Feeding waterfowl is prohibited, as it interferes with their natural behaviour.
🎒
What to bring
A good pair of binoculars (at least 8x magnification) is essential for identifying distant birds on the lake or in reeds. Camouflage clothing in muted colours helps avoid startling the birds.
🧭
Getting there
The bird sanctuary is located on the southeastern shore of Velence Lake, near the town of Velence. Accessible by car via the M7 motorway; public buses run from Budapest to Velence.
🦌
What to expect
Birds may be far out on the lake or hidden in dense reeds, so quiet waiting and patient observation are required. Allow at least two to three hours for a rewarding visit.
