The MOL Refinery in Százhalombatta, officially known as the Danube Refinery, is the largest oil processing plant in Hungary and one of the most complex facilities in Central and Eastern Europe. Operations began in the 1960s, and the site has since played a critical role in the region's energy security. Crude oil is primarily sourced from Russia via the Friendship (Druzhba) pipeline and processed into a wide range of products, including gasoline, diesel, heating oil, and bitumen. The refinery features an annual processing capacity of approximately 8.1 million tons of crude oil, utilizing advanced technologies to maximize the yield of high-value fuels. In recent years, significant investments have been made in environmental protection systems and modernization to meet stringent EU emission standards. In addition to fuel production, the facility is a key hub for the petrochemical industry, supplying raw materials for plastics manufacturing. Its strategic location on the Danube River facilitates the efficient transport of finished products by both ship and rail.
