Khankendi, previously known internationally as Stepanakert, sits at about eight hundred metres altitude in a valley surrounded by mountains in the Karabakh highlands and traditionally had around fifty-five thousand inhabitants. Following the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict the city returned to Azerbaijani control in 2023 and is today the focus of extensive reconstruction and repopulation efforts. The region around Khankendi looks back on millennia of history, evidenced by numerous Bronze Age archaeological finds and traces of early Caucasian-Albanian Christianity. The surroundings are characterised by walnut and mulberry groves, traditional silk production and a mild mountain climate. Plans include a modern university, a sports complex and a Mugham cultural centre, all intended to make Khankendi a regional educational and cultural hub of Karabakh.
