Shusha (Azerbaijan)

Weather…

Shusha is the cultural capital of Azerbaijan, built on a mountain plateau surrounded by steep cliffs. The city was founded in 1752 by Panah Ali Khan as an impregnable fortress. In the center of the settlement is the Yukhari Govhar Agha Mosque, whose twin minarets are a defining element of the cityscape. Shusha is the musical center of the Caucasus region, the birthplace of traditional Azerbaijani mugham music. The Jidir Duzu plain lies on the edge of the city, offering views of the surrounding mountains and the Dashalti gorge. This area was historically a venue for equestrian games and festivals. The local architecture is characterized by houses built of carved stone and ornate window frames. Shusha also has a long history in carpet weaving, with local patterns being among the finest examples of the Karabakh style. The city can be accessed via the new Victory Road (Zafar Yolu) from the direction of Fuzuli, from the international airport. The late spring and early autumn months are the most suitable for a visit, as the summers are cooler due to the high altitude, and the winters are snowy and cold.
