Khudafarin Bridges (Azerbaijan)

Weather…

The Khudafarin Bridges are two magnificent medieval stone structures spanning the Aras River, connecting Azerbaijan and Iran. The larger bridge, featuring 15 arches, was built in 1027 by Abu'l-Aswar Shavur of the Shaddadid dynasty and is noted for its exceptional durability, constructed from river stone and baked brick. Roughly 750 meters upstream lies the smaller 11-arch bridge, believed to have been built or reconstructed in the 13th century during the Ilkhanid period. Strategically positioned along the Silk Road, these bridges were vital conduits for international trade and military movements between the Caucasus and Persia for centuries. Despite suffering damage during various historical conflicts, significant portions of the 15-arch bridge remain intact, showcasing sophisticated medieval engineering. Following the liberation of the Jabrayil district in 2020, the bridges have regained their status as symbols of national pride and cultural heritage. They represent a unique link between different eras and civilizations that have crossed the Aras over the last millennium.
