Kapan is the capital of Syunik, Armenia's southernmost province, and with about 40,000 inhabitants the leading administrative, industrial and educational centre of southern Armenia. The town sits at roughly 900 metres in a narrow gorge of the Voghji River, framed by the 3,214-metre Mount Khustup to the south and the Bargushat range to the north. Inhabited since the Bronze Age, Kapan served as the capital of the medieval kingdom of Syunik, and in Soviet times grew explosively from the 1930s around the copper and molybdenum mines of Kajaran and the Syunik copper combine. Today the city is shaped by its dramatic skyline of 1970s tower blocks perched on rocky terraces, a modern cableway to the Vahanavank monastery, the folk festival 'Hyusisapayl' and ceremonies dedicated to Garegin Nzhdeh, who proclaimed the short-lived Republic of Mountainous Armenia here in 1921. Kapan is also the gateway towards Iran and the wild forests of the Shikahogh reserve.
