Lake Maralgol (Azerbaijan)

Weather…

Lake Maralgol is a high-altitude mountain lake located at 1,902 meters above sea level in the Murovdag range of western Azerbaijan. It was formed by a catastrophic geological event on September 30, 1139, when a powerful earthquake caused a massive landslide from Mount Kyapaz, blocking the river flow and creating several lakes in the area. The name 'Maralgol' means 'Deer Lake,' inspired by the red deer that historically inhabited the surrounding dense forests and alpine meadows. Covering an area of approximately 23 hectares, the lake reaches a maximum depth of 21 meters and is renowned for its exceptional water clarity and deep blue hue. It is part of the Göygöl National Park, which was established to protect the unique ecosystem created by the 12th-century seismic activity. The lake is surrounded by subalpine vegetation and provides a habitat for various rare species of flora and fauna. Due to its remote location and strict environmental protections, Maralgol remains one of the most pristine natural sites in the Caucasus region.
