Lake Goygol is considered one of the most beautiful and iconic natural landmarks in Azerbaijan, situated at an altitude of 1,556 meters. The lake was formed on September 30, 1139, following a massive earthquake that caused a landslide from Mount Kapaz, which blocked the Kurekcay River. It is characterized by its exceptionally clear, cold water and a maximum depth of approximately 96 meters. The surrounding landscape consists of steep forested mountains that reflected in the lake's surface, giving it its name, which translates to "Blue Lake." The lake is part of a larger system of seven smaller alpine lakes in the vicinity, all formed by similar tectonic processes. Due to its status within a national park, the lake is protected from industrial activity, ensuring the preservation of its unique mountain-lake ecosystem and pristine water quality.

This impressive mountain lake is typically accessed via scenic, winding paved roads leading up from the nearby city of Ganja. Because it lies within a highly protected national park, visitors usually need to pass through official entrance gates where small environmental conservation fees are collected.
Best season
Summer and early autumn are the most popular times to visit, as the mountain air provides a refreshing escape from the intense heat of the lower plains. Autumn is particularly wide-open when the surrounding dense forests erupt into animated displays of red, orange, and lovely yellow foliage.

The environment features steep, forested mountain slopes enclosing the pristine water, with designated viewing areas and paved or gravel walkways. While the main observation points are easily accessible, any trails venturing further into the national park can be steep, rocky, and quite physically demanding.
