Shikahogh State Reserve (Armenia)

Weather…

The Shikahogh State Reserve is located in the extreme southeast of Armenia in the Syunik Province and is the country's second-largest forest reserve. Established in 1958, it was created to protect the pristine oak and hornbeam forests on the northern slopes of the Meghri Mountains. Spanning over 10,000 hectares, the reserve is characterized by its steep slopes, deep river valleys, and exceptional floral diversity. A unique feature of the reserve is the Munjivan plane tree grove, one of the few natural oriental plane forests in the region, featuring trees that are centuries old. The reserve's isolated location and rugged terrain provide a critical sanctuary for endangered species such as the Caucasian leopard, Armenian mouflon, and Caucasian black grouse. Researchers have identified over 1,100 species of plants within its boundaries, with about 70 listed in the Red Book of Armenia. Shikahogh also plays a vital role in local hydrology, feeding the Tsav and Shikahogh rivers with numerous mountain springs and waterfalls.
