Yevlakh lies at the geographical heart of Azerbaijan on the right bank of the Kura River and is traditionally called the gateway to Karabakh, as the main road and rail axes leading from Baku to the west, north and south converge here. The city has about sixty thousand inhabitants and, since the late nineteenth century, has been an important trading hub for cotton grown across the Mil Steppe. The Yevlakh railway station is one of the country's largest junctions, linking the capital with Tbilisi, Sheki and the recently restored Karabakh region. Notable sights include the modern Heydar Aliyev Centre, the traditional bazaar, the twentieth-century historic Kura bridge and the nearby riparian wetland forests that shelter numerous migratory birds.
