💡 Tips
- Agdam is undergoing massive reconstruction and demining; travel is strictly regulated and requires special official permits.
- Never wander off the clearly marked paths or main roads due to the high risk of unexploded ordnance.
- The remains of the Agdam Mosque are one of the few surviving historic structures; treat the site with deep respect.
- Because infrastructure is still being developed, you must bring all necessary supplies, including water and snacks, with you.
🍽 Food
Dining options are currently limited to modular cafes serving basic, hearty Azerbaijani fare to reconstruction crews.
Savory stuffed flatbreads might occasionally be available at temporary roadside food stalls.
Enjoy traditional black tea served in pear-shaped Armudu glasses at nearby rest stops.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Shopping is minimal; look for small convenience kiosks mainly catering to the rebuilding workforce.
Local agricultural products, like pomegranates, are sometimes sold on the access roads leading into the area.
The area immediately surrounding the historic mosque provides a quiet moment amid the heavy rebuilding efforts.
The stark, open landscapes around the city boundaries offer a somber and peaceful place for reflection.

Agdam lies on the edge of the Karabakh plain, east of Khankendi, and was once a flourishing city of more than fifty thousand inhabitants. During the First Karabakh War the town was almost entirely destroyed in 1993 and remained an uninhabited ghost town for three decades, travellers often compared it to Hiroshima after the war. Following its return in 2020, an ambitious reconstruction has been underway since 2021: Agdam is set to become Azerbaijan's first Smart City, with zero-emission energy, intelligent infrastructure, modern residential districts and a planned stadium for the football club Qarabag FK, which had previously been exiled to Baku. The historic Juma Mosque dating from 1868, one of the few surviving buildings, has been restored and now stands as a symbol of Azerbaijani reconstruction and collective memory.
