Fuzuli lies on the southern edge of the reclaimed Karabakh region about a hundred kilometres from the Iranian border and, like Agdam, was a ghost town for three decades following the destruction of the First Karabakh War in 1993. Since liberation in 2020, Azerbaijan has launched a rapid reconstruction that has made the town a symbol of the Great Return. As early as October 2021, Fuzuli International Airport was inaugurated, built in just eight months, serving as the gateway to the entire Karabakh region. The city was named after the famous classical poet Muhammad Fuzuli (1494-1556), whose works in Turkish, Arabic and Persian enriched world literature. Planned developments include modern residential quarters with solar and geothermal installations, a university and a central cultural complex featuring the Fuzuli Mausoleum.
