Barda lies in the fertile Kura-Aras Lowland on the right bank of the Tartar River and looks back on more than two thousand years of history. In antiquity the city, known as Partav, was the capital of the Kingdom of Caucasian Albania and an important centre of early Christianity in the Caucasus. In the fifth and sixth centuries Barda was a significant episcopal see, and later, under the Sassanids and Arabs, a flourishing commercial city on the Silk Road. Its emblem is the octagonal Barda Mausoleum dating from 1322, built by the brilliant architect Ahmad ibn Ayyub of Nakhchivan and adorned with Kufic inscriptions formed from coloured glazed bricks. The surroundings contain numerous archaeological sites, fertile pomegranate orchards and traditional workshops still producing carpets and copperware that preserve the region's craft heritage.
