The Goris State Sanctuary, established in 2022, is one of Armenia's newest protected areas, covering an area of nearly 2000 hectares in the Syunik province. It was created to protect the unique rock formations known as the 'Stone Forest' and the rich ecosystems of the region. This area is characterized by deep gorges, caves, and bizarre, wind-eroded rock needles. It is a crucial habitat for endangered species, including the Caucasian leopard, brown bears, bezoar goats, and lynxes. The sanctuary is also part of the Armenian ecological corridor, which allows for connectivity between different protected areas and promotes the genetic exchange of animal populations. The landscape is not only ecologically valuable but also of sweeping beauty, offering potential for sustainable tourism.

Best season
Exciting wildlife observation in the deep gorges is often significantly easier during the much warmer months, but quietly looking for animal footprints in the winter snow can also be an extremely rewarding experience in this very remote region.
Best time of day
The exceptionally quiet twilight phases at very early dawn and late dusk significantly increase your overall chances of spotting very shy animals in the immediate vicinity of the deep caves and rugged cliffs of this unique protected sanctuary.
Etiquette
Always maintain an exceptionally quiet demeanor while in the field and absolutely avoid any sudden movements near the steep gorges. Keep a highly generous and safe distance from the hidden, suspected habitats of any rare or large predators.
What to bring
An extremely powerful and crystal-clear pair of binoculars is completely indispensable here for any sightings. Make sure to wear sturdy, ankle-supporting hiking boots, as the very rough and rocky terrain surrounding the deep gorges is physically quite demanding.
Getting there
The remote sanctuary is hidden deep within highly inaccessible mountainous regions; the rather difficult journey typically requires a robust four-wheel-drive vehicle and very precise, local knowledge of the unpaved, rough, and winding access roads.
What to expect
Large apex predators like Caucasian leopards are extremely elusive and naturally avoid all human contact. Focus your energy instead on enjoying the dramatic, rugged landscape and the fascinating process of learning to accurately identify various animal tracks.
