The Sev Lich Sanctuary, whose name means 'Black Lake', is located in the Syunik province on the border with Azerbaijan. The centerpiece of the sanctuary, founded in 1987, is the eponymous crater lake, situated at an altitude of over 2,600 meters in the Syunik volcanic mountains. The lake and its surroundings are an important ecosystem, serving as a habitat for rare plants and animals. The water of the lake is known for being ice-cold throughout the year. The area is an important resting place for migratory birds and a habitat for various amphibians and reptiles. The sanctuary was established to conserve the unique alpine landscape, water resources, and biodiversity. Its remote location and pristine nature make it a destination for adventurous hikers.

The very busy bird migration seasons in spring and autumn undoubtedly offer the absolute best opportunities to extensively observe a large and colorful variety of waterfowl at this striking, high-altitude crater lake located within the volcanic mountains.
Best time of day
The very early morning is often completely windless and wonderfully calm, consistently creating genuinely excellent conditions for watching birds by the water and capturing fantastically impressive reflections on the remarkably smooth lake surface.
Etiquette
Since the sensitive lake also serves as a critically important drinking water source, utmost and strict care is constantly required. Any type of pollution of the pure water or the surrounding shorelines is absolutely forbidden without any exceptions.
What to bring
A high-quality spotting scope or binoculars with very high magnification are completely handy for detailed birdwatching here. Warm, absolutely windproof clothing is highly recommended, as temperatures in the high altitudes can drop extremely quickly and surprisingly.
Getting there
The somewhat challenging access to the remote mountain lake is typically via unpaved, narrow mountain roads. Always and absolutely inquire about the most current trail and road conditions beforehand, especially after heavy rains or during the early spring melt.
What to expect
The various waterfowl can be easily spooked; it is far better to sit quietly and very patiently in one fixed location rather than constantly pacing up and down the open shoreline. Quiet waiting is remarkably often rewarded here with very beautiful, surprisingly close-up sightings.
