Mingachevir, often called the City of Lights, sits picturesquely on the banks of the Kura River in central Azerbaijan and is home to roughly one hundred thousand residents. The town was founded in 1948 in connection with the construction of the country's largest hydroelectric power station, which still supplies a significant share of national electricity. The Mingachevir Reservoir, covering over six hundred square kilometres, is the largest artificial lake in Azerbaijan and a popular destination for water sports, fishing and recreation. During the building works numerous Bronze and Iron Age archaeological finds were unearthed, including clay sarcophagi and ancient inscriptions. Wide tree-lined boulevards, the central Bulvar promenade and several modern universities make Mingachevir one of the most liveable cities in the country.
