Thayatal National Park (Austria)

Weather…

Thayatal National Park in Lower Austria may be the smallest of Austria's national parks, but it has a remarkable concentration of biodiversity within its narrow confines. Located on the border with the Czech Republic, it works in tandem with the Czech Podyjí National Park to protect the deeply incised canyon of the Thaya River. This transboundary protected area is a legacy of the Iron Curtain, as the decades of military closure allowed the landscape to remain largely untouched by modern development. The valley is home to over 1,200 plant species, reflecting a unique meeting point between continental and Pannonian climatic influences. One of the park's greatest success stories is the return of the European wildcat, which finds first-rate cover in the dense broadleaf forests and rocky outcrops. The geological highlight is the Umlaufberg, a mountain almost entirely encircled by a massive meander of the river, creating a striking natural amphitheater. Perched high above the valley is Hardegg Castle, which overlooks Austria's smallest town and provides a striking historical counterpoint to the wild river landscape below. Hikers can follow trails that dip into the valley floor, where the silence is broken only by the rushing water and the calls of black storks nesting in the cliffs.
