Podyjí National Park Wildlife Reserve (Czech Republic)

Weather…

Podyjí National Park in South Moravia is the smallest national park in the Czech Republic, covering 63 square kilometers, yet it is home to exceptionally high biodiversity. It stretches along a 40-kilometer-long, deeply incised valley of the Dyje (Thaya) River on the border with Austria. The river forms spectacular meanders and deep canyons carved into hard crystalline rock. Because the area was part of the forbidden zone of the Iron Curtain during the Cold War, nature remained almost untouched by human intervention for decades. This allowed for the preservation of thermophilous oak forests, heaths, and unique forest steppes. Wildlife includes rare species such as the European green lizard, the smooth snake, and the black stork. On the Austrian side, it directly borders Thayatal National Park, creating a cross-border protected area. In addition to its natural beauty, the park features historical landmarks like Bítov Castle and the ruins of Nový Hrádek Castle, perched high above the river loops.
