Seiyun is the largest town in Wadi Hadhramaut, a valley more than 160 kilometres long that forms one of the most spectacular natural landscapes on the Arabian Peninsula. The city sits at 700 metres elevation amid date palm groves and is dominated by the famous palace of the Kathiri sultans: a seven-storey white-and-cream mud-brick structure completed in 1920, regarded as one of the largest earthen buildings in the world. Today the palace houses an archaeological and ethnographic museum with finds from the Bronze Age and from the pre-Islamic Hadhrami kingdoms. Seiyun has been a centre of Islamic scholarship for centuries and hosts many Sufi schools. Its international airport connects the region with the Gulf states, where many Hadhramis work and remit earnings home. Local dates, honey and tobacco are highly prized, and the elaborate traditional weddings of Seiyun are renowned across southern Arabia.
