Hardegg Castle (Austria)

Weather…

Hardegg Castle towers majestically over Austria's smallest town on the border with the Czech Republic. The imposing border fortress was built in the 12th century and served for centuries as a strategic bulwark against incursions from the north. After a period of decay, the complex was extensively restored in the late 19th century by the Princes of Khevenhüller-Metsch in a historicist style. Today, the castle houses a museum dedicated, among other things, to the life of Emperor Maximilian of Mexico. The architecture combines Romanesque origins with Gothic and Renaissance additions. Located in the heart of the Thayatal National Park, the castle is surrounded by an untouched natural landscape. Visitors can tour the defensive fortifications, the palace, and the chapel while learning more about the turbulent history of the region.
