Semmering Railway (Austria)

Weather…

The Semmering Railway is Europe's first standard-gauge mountain railway, connecting Gloggnitz in Lower Austria with Mürzzuschlag in Styria. Constructed between 1848 and 1854 under the leadership of engineer Carl von Ghega, it is considered a milestone in technical history. Along a distance of 41 kilometers, the railway overcomes an elevation difference of 460 meters, passing through 15 tunnels and over 16 viaducts. The architectural design of the stations and engineering structures was harmoniously integrated into the mountain landscape, making the route a unique cultural landscape. In 1998, the Semmering Railway became the first railway line in the world to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The railway facilitated the development of Semmering into an exclusive spa and winter sports destination for Viennese society during the imperial era. Today, the line remains a vital part of the Southern Railway and a popular destination for hikers.
