Ternitz is a significant industrial city in the Lower Austrian district of Neunkirchen, situated at the transition between the Vienna Basin and the Alpine foothills. Located in the Schwarza Valley, the settlement underwent rapid development starting in the 19th century, evolving from a rural village into a central hub for the iron and steel industry. The founding of the Schoeller-Bleckmann works was particularly influential, making Ternitz globally renowned for high-quality stainless steel products. Despite structural changes in heavy industry, the city remains a vital economic location characterized today by modernized industrial plants and innovative enterprises. Beyond its industrial character, Ternitz features diverse outdoor recreational opportunities due to its proximity to the Semmering and Rax mountains. Cultural highlights include the 'Herrenhaus', the former administrative center of the factory management, and modern 20th-century religious buildings. Ternitz was granted city status in 1948 and is currently the most populous municipality in the Neunkirchen district, underscoring its regional importance.
