Wartenstein Castle Ruins (Austria)

Weather…

Wartenstein Castle is located near Raach am Hochgebirge in Lower Austria and has a turbulent history dating back to 1190. Originally built as a border fortress against incursions from the east, the complex suffered severe damage during the Ottoman sieges of 1529 and 1683. Over the centuries, owners changed frequently, with the castle being owned by Gloggnitz Abbey among others. In the second half of the 19th century, the ruins were partially rebuilt in a historicist style and used as a summer residence. A special chapter in its modern history was its use by the Wenner-Gren Foundation in the 1950s, which held international anthropological symposia here. The castle's architecture today combines medieval base structures with Neo-Gothic elements, giving it a characteristic, romantic appearance amidst the forested hilly landscape.
