Raabs Castle (Austria)

Weather…

Raabs Castle stands majestically on a steep rocky ridge directly at the confluence of the German and Moravian Thaya rivers in the Waldviertel region of Lower Austria. As one of Austria's oldest stone castles, it was first documented in 1100 and is historically regarded as the mother of all Austrian castles. For centuries, it served as the administrative center of the County of Raabs and played a crucial role in securing the border against Bohemia. The architecture of the complex combines Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance elements, with the massive keep and the Gothic chapel being particularly noteworthy. In the 16th century, under the Lords of Puchheim, the medieval fortress was expanded into a representative Renaissance palace. Today, the castle is privately owned and serves as a venue for cultural events and exhibitions that document the rich history of the region and the Raabs lordship.
