Steinegg Castle Ruins (Austria)

Weather…

The Steinegg castle ruins are idyllically situated on a rocky outcrop above the Kamp Valley in Lower Austria, near the municipality of Altenburg. The fortress was built in the 12th century and served the Lords of Steinegg as their ancestral seat and for monitoring the strategically important Kamp Valley. The complex is a classic example of a medieval hilltop castle, whose architecture closely adapts to the topographical features of the terrain. Over the centuries, owners changed frequently, including significant noble families such as the Kuenringers and later the Lords of Puchheim. During the 15th century, the castle was involved in military conflicts between Frederick III and Matthias Corvinus, which led to the first severe damages. After the castle lost its military significance in the 16th century, the slow decay of the building structure began. Today, impressive remains of the curtain wall, the palace, and a gatehouse are still preserved, offering hikers a deep insight into medieval fortress architecture.
