Kollmitz Castle Ruins (Austria)

Weather…

The Kollmitz Castle ruins stand on a steep rocky ridge high above the Thaya river and, covering an area of around 13.5 hectares, are among the largest and most impressive castle complexes in Lower Austria. The first documented mention of the fortress dates back to 1135, when it served as a strategic outpost on the border between Austria and Bohemia. Particularly striking are the two well-preserved round towers and the so-called Hunger Tower from the 14th century, which was used as a prison. The complex features a massive outer bailey and a main castle separated by deep moats. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the castle was significantly expanded under the Frei von Wohra family to meet growing military requirements. It was not until 1708 that the management of the castle was abandoned, leading to its decay until comprehensive preservation measures were initiated in the 20th century to protect the historic site.
