Pottenbrunn Water Castle (Austria)

Weather…

Pottenbrunn Castle is a striking Renaissance palace located in the district of the same name in St. Pölten, Lower Austria. The complex is primarily known as a water castle, as it is surrounded by a wide, artificially created moat that formerly fulfilled an important defensive function. Originally, a medieval defensive structure stood on this site, which was fundamentally transformed into a magnificent country estate in the 16th century under the Althan family. Characteristic of Pottenbrunn are the prominent round tower with its onion dome and the four-winged complex surrounding an inner courtyard. The architecture demonstrates the transition from a fortified stronghold to a representative noble residence of the early modern period. For a long time, the castle housed a significant collection of pewter figures, which continues to exist in an altered form today. Despite massive damage at the end of World War II, the castle was lovingly restored and is now privately owned, while the surrounding castle park is accessible to the public.
